It's official!
Thanks to the hard work of nearly 900 Working Assets customers and members in North Carolina, along with our partner groups NC Fair Share, Demos, and Progressive States Network, Governor Easley signed HB 91 on Friday. The newly enacted law will allow eligible citizens to register and vote on the same day at all early voting sites in North Carolina.
We were almost certain that the bill would be come law when it passed the House and Senate a couple of weeks ago, but it's always nice to take a moment to reflect on (and celebrate!) our success when it becomes official.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: reforming our voter registration laws is one of the most effective ways to ensure that all eligible citizens are able to participate in the electoral process. It's exciting to see North Carolina join the ranks of Iowa in passing such monumental legislation this year. Now we're keeping our fingers crossed (while organizing like crazy) to bring Massachusetts on board, too.
