Back to School with the Youth Vote

I never liked the last days of summer...and right now, many students are nervously squeezing every ounce of enjoyment before returning to school. But one positive note to these back-to-school days (especially for me, who is not going back) is that it means we can get more attention focused on youth organizing.

Despite the consistent complaints that you can't organize young people, Working Assets is proud to support organizations that prove that sentiment wrong. One of these orgs, the League of Young Voters, just launched a new website: check it out.

Fortunately, they are not working alone, and there are a number of other groups doing interesting and effective work. Mike Connery at Future Majority has written extensively about this, including a re-cap of the YearlyKos panel on the subject -- worth reading, and watching video from the panel, and and learning how groups like Young People For are moving the discussion forward.

The kids are where it's at. Especially in working class neighborhoods.
I happen to know several, potentially first time voters for 2008, who would vote for a dead skunk before they'd vote Republican. But they're not so sure that the Democrats are much better.
It's up to the candidates to speak to these young adults as adults with good sense, and encourage them to vote.
They need to be shown that there really IS a difference between Democrats and Republicans.
