Iraq: Will Congress Fail Us Again?

Today was a typical Friday for me. I got up, walked my dog and headed into work, but this morning Paul Krugman's opinion editorial in the New York Times really spoke to me. The title was "Time to Take A Stand." Almost every day some story or picture of the war in Iraq disturbs me and I often feel hopeless about the never ending war. I often e-mail or call Rep. Barbara Lee about the war, join a local vigil or participate in an anti-war demonstration, but like most Americans I am continually frustrated that Congress is not doing their part to end the war. It is time for Congress to take a stand. Last November, the current Congress was elected to make a change and now is the time not to ask President Bush to bring our troops home, but to demand that withdrawal starts now. Too many American and Iraqi lives are at stake.

Gen. Petraeus is going to testify before Congress on Tuesday during the anniversary of September 11. It is time for Congress to ask the general the hard questions. Paul Krugman put it best.

Here’s what will definitely happen when Gen. David Petraeus testifies before Congress next week: he’ll assert that the surge has reduced violence in Iraq — as long as you don’t count Sunnis killed by Sunnis, Shiites killed by Shiites, Iraqis killed by car bombs and people shot in the front of the head.

Here’s what I’m afraid will happen: Democrats will look at Gen. Petraeus’s uniform and medals and fall into their usual cringe. They won’t ask hard questions out of fear that someone might accuse them of attacking the military. After the testimony, they’ll desperately try to get Republicans to agree to a resolution that politely asks President Bush to maybe, possibly, withdraw some troops, if he feels like it.

Yeah, probably. They're also failing us on the issue of impeachment, and standing up to the Bushiato. They're more impressed by K-street than by the people who elected them.
Fire the Republi-lites! Suppport the populists!
    Take back the Democrats!
