Unless You Hate Children...
The House of Representatives passed an important expansion of healthcare for children yesterday, despite the President's threat of a veto. It's not a veto-proof majority, but you'd have to hate children to kill this bill.
Or, you'd have to be the Senate.
No, no...I'm not saying the Senate hates children. I'm just saying there are plenty of Senators who hate passing anything, as we saw last week in the failure to bring habeas corpus, troop readiness or Iraq redeployment to an actual vote.
So, while this bill does OBVIOUS good, don't assume the Senate operates in the same way as rational actors.
Working Assets has talked about this issue before -- and one of the 50 organizations our members help support is Families USA, which has worked hard on the CHIP and SCHIP fights...and is continuing to fight now to ensure the Senate puts this important legislation on the President's desk.
