Another Reason to Fight the Phone Companies
Over at Open Left, we get the hilarious account of one more reason to fight the phone companies: because we either side with institutions that illegally spied on us, or we side with a 75-year-old retired Airforce Nurse who is the secretary of her local square-dancing club.
I think I know whose team I'd rather be on.
And we learn of another way to fight them: as Mona Shaw did...with a hammer.
The insulting idea that, as Shaw puts it, "they thought just because we're old enough to get Social Security that we lack both brains and backbone."
So, after stewing over it all weekend, on the following Monday, she went downstairs, got Don's claw hammer and said: "C'mon, honey, we're going to Comcast."
Did you try to stop her, Mr. Shaw?
"Oh no, no," he says.
Hammer time: Shaw storms in the company's office. BAM! She whacks the keyboard of the customer service rep. BAM! Down goes the monitor. BAM! She totals the telephone. People scatter, scream, cops show up and what does she do? POW! A parting shot to the phone!
Now we all want to take a hammer to a phone (and big phone company) at times...but we don't all have the squeaky clean record of Mona "The Hammer" Shaw to get away with it.
So, here are two alternatives:
1. Hit the phone companies where it hurts. By holding them accountable for their illegal actions, we'll put more of a dent in their wallet than Mona put in their keyboard. Take action now.
2. Choose a phone that will do what you want...without the threat of violence. Become a Working Assets customer -- we won't spy on you, we won't censor you, we'll buy out your contract, and our customer service people are really, really nice.
(I'm a customer as well as a team member...so I can vouch for their friendliness on the phone.)

Welcome aboard...
I've always been a musician so I've been fighting the Phone Company for the last 40 years...
Praise the lord and pass the ammunition...
Why not also fight the Credit Card companies.
I have a WA Credit Card, administered (now) by Bank of America. Always pay off my balance each month. Was sick this month and misread a note on my calendar to pay this bill.
Was (2) days late, on a $331 amount. $39 Late Fee! How can they ever justify this amount? How could their loss or costs to administer this ever be $39?!
Let the "punishment fit the crime." Where's the "fit" here!?
Another prime example of how Banks, et al, rip off the public.
$39 may not seem like a lot to some people. But, I'm a low-income senior, living in federally assisted low-income housing. $39 is a lot to me. More than my electric and gas bills, combined.
I'm writing my Congressman and Senator -- as well as the US Comptroller of the Currency (they regulate banks, etc).
Why not have WA take up this issue, too.

My father retired from a wholly owned subsidiary of AT&T, Western Electric now Lucent, a year after divestitre in 1985. He said at the time that divestment was going to be the biggest screwing of the American people in the the nation's history and we'd long for the days when the Bell System was a monopoly, tightly controlled by federal regulations, because it delivered a better product.
22 years later, it looks as if he was right.
Mona Shaw is no doubt soon to be the newest detainee at Gitmo...
Hi ArtAstro-
I'm Working Assets' liaison to B of A, I was concerned to hear about the late fee you were charged, and I'd like to see what I can do for you. I will research this and contact you off line.

Check out the business section of the Denver Post from Sunday 10/21 (Nacchio effects spy probe). According to docs in the Nacchio trial, the telcos were sharing info. with the gov't before 9/11, which isn't a shocker but exposes their lies and rationale for participating. This should be national news.
