Feingold Gets the Gold
Last week, many Working Assets members urged the Senate to reject the nomination of Hans von Spakovsky to the FEC. As a man with a record of voter suppression, he is the Bush Administration's perfect choice for such a role -- and America's worst.
Today, Open Left is reporting that Senator Feingold will object to the von Spakovsky appointment. He is parrying the move by Senator McConnell to sneak this professional vote-suppressor through via an up-or-down vote on 4 commissioners at once.
I don't know the parliamentary procedures in all this...and honestly, I don't feel Americans should have to. The mechanisms should work in such a way that allows bad people to be blocked from important posts, and it shouldn't matter who out-maneuvered whom on moving votes through the Senate.
But as long as we're going to have legitimate discussion of what disqualifies von Spakovsky for the role suppressed, I'm glad we have Senators like Feingold who are keeping an eye on other ways to keep our Elections honest.
