Planned Parenthood Prevails
Every morning I have to wade through dozens and dozens of emails as I start my day. News briefings from the major papers around the country, action alerts from the scores of non-profits I follow - not to mention the penis enlargement spam I can't seem to filter out to save my life - fill my box. But today, one of those emails sent me jogging through the office to share the good news.
The city of Aurora, Illinois announced yesterday that they found no legal basis for denying the occupancy permit for Planned Parenthood's new clinic and was therefore allowing them to open their doors and start serving clients.
I grew up in Aurora. It's an odd city - split by the Fox River, several school districts and neighborhoods centered around ethnic and religious social clubs. In a lot of ways, it still resembles the blue collar city of my youth. And that's exactly why it is so important that the reproductive health services Planned Parenthood provides be readily available.
The protesters are still trying to shut down the clinic. My good friend Carrie who still lives in Aurora told me she spotted one teen aged boy holding an anti-choice sign and "stared him down and shook my head."
If we are to preserve women's right to choose, we all need to be prepared to do a lot more. If you're a Working Assets customer, you have a head start. Planned Parenthood is one of the non-profits you're supporting by using our products.
