Update On Stopping the Coal Rush
In October of last year, I gave everyone an update on our efforts to stop new coal-fired power plants from being constructed.
Well, just a couple weeks ago I took a look at this list of coal plants cancelled in 2007 (59 in all) and realized that our activism efforts played a role in at least 30 of these cancellations. With our allies from great organizations like the Rainforest Action Network (a 2007 recipient of Working Assets donations) and the Sierra Club (the Sierra Club Foundation is on our 2008 donations ballot), we're making a big difference in the fight to save our climate. So thanks for all your activism work!
Our latest advocacy efforts are directed straight at the energy and utility companies, asking them (both for the sake of our planet and their shareholders) to invest in the clean power sources of the future, not the dinosaur fossil fuel plants of the past. Please take action today -- and then keep an eye on your in-box for our next activism opportunities to stop new coal plants and help grow the green jobs economy.
(And to follow-up on Al Gore's quote from my previous post...indeed, some courageous activists have now upped the ante and started taking direct action against the construction of new coal-fired power plants. Read more about direct action to stop coal plants on the Rising Tide website here.)

I am glad for every coal plant not built or shut down. However just asking for clean energy will not provide a solution to our energy problems. Big business is all to willing to take tax incentives and like so many government programs this one has a major flaw. The energy does not have to be actually consumed but can be used to offset fossil-fuel plant emissions. This is happening in New England. Industrial wind farms planned for/built in areas of poor to marginal wind potential produce electricity that is unpredictable and unusable in grid applications. Hundreds of miles of new transmission lines must be built to handle the full capacity produced on the 14 days a year the wind blows at a sustained 30 MPH.
These are huge structures requiring 1000's of tons of rebar and concrete to erect (both energy hogs to produce). They kill birds and bats by the thousands. They destroy the scenic beauty, peace, quiet and star-studded night skies in the mostly rural places they are built. Places with little background noise or ambient night lights. They tower above everything (500 feet is the going size). They do not decrease greenhouse gases because they replace no fossil fuel burning plants. They create very few permanent jobs. They are another attempt at a magic cure for a problem that can only be cured by every person taking responsibility for their energy consumption to the greatest degree possible whether that is serious conservation or going off the grid.
