Blue Dogs are Cheap Dates
The Blue Dogs - those bizarrely named Democrats who purport to be fiscal conservatives except when it matters - are absolutely the very best deal in town for the insurance industry. The Washington Post had a nice roundup today illustrating how the insurance industry and other health related political action committees have been pumping cash into the Blue Dogs - over $1 million. But by any reasonable count, those same special interests can probably give the Blue Dogs credit for saving them at least $10 billion in future profits by stripping out some of the best features of a public option from the likely house bill. One can only assume that this is their standard price.
