Would You Pay for the F-22 to Pass Hate Crimes Legislation?
Very strange stuff happening with the overall military authorization bill being debated in the Senate. The unneeded, horrifically expensive F-22 fighter, which the Pentagon says it does not need and Obama has threatened to veto the entire bill unless funding is removed, is still in. And the generally wimpy Harry Reid has called for a vote on finally passing Hate Crimes legislation (that is, legislation that, among other things, will make it a federal crime to beat or kill someone because they are gay, which happens all too often). So, who blinks? If Hate Crimes passes, will Obama still veto the overall legislation since it will still contain the F-22?
What would you do?

Spending billions on unneeded weapons is not a reasonable price for the Hate Crimes Bill. The Hate Crime Bill should stand on its own, it is not only about crimes against gay people, it includes gender which could included the oldest hate crime in the world-rape.
With 60 Democratic votes and I would hope at least 2 or 3 reasonable republicans a clean Hate Crimes Bill should pass easily. We should not have to buy our civil rights.
I applaud whoever was clever enough to kill an atrocity like hate crimes legislation by attaching it to a bill that Obama is inclined to veto. There is always the risk that he'll be willing to pay for a necessary piece of equipment as a small price for taking away the liberties of the people but at least the chances are reduced.
