COLUMN: The Lesson of the DMV

Well, early September is here, and as promised, my first new column for Creators Syndicate is now being published. As you will see, it is about a little-reported but HUGELY important issue happening in states and communities all over the country. You can find the column here.

I have been already been told the column is now expected to run weekly in, among others, The Denver Post, The San Francisco Chronicle and right here on Working Assets website -- which is a fantastic start. But that's just a start, and I could use your help.

Last month, I told folks that if you want to see this weekly column in your local newspaper, call or email your local editorial page editor and let them know about it. Show them the link above. You can find your local newspapers and contact info for your local newspaper editors by zip code here.

As you may have heard, Media Matters for America this week published a groundbreaking study showing that conservative syndicated columnists dominate disproportionately dominate America's newspapers. So I am going to need as many readers like you to contact your local papers asking them to carry the column.

It is a real honor to be published by Creators -- the same syndicate that published my friend Molly Ivins and that publishes some truly terrific progressive writers.

I, for one, am going to do my best to emulate Molly's passion and her focus on working-class economic issues. Just before her death, Molly was nice enough to write a column calling me "a new generation populist who instinctively understands that the only real questions are 'Who's getting screwed?' and "Who's doing the screwing?'" That's what this column is going to be all about -- and your help getting it into as many newspapers as possible is crucial.

Because my writing takes on the Establishment, and because I am one of the few columnists who lives not on the coasts but in the heartland, I rely on grassroots efforts like this to support my work. So again, thank you for your support -- and for reaching out to your local newspapers today and in the coming weeks. And please -- if you have column ideas, email them to me.

NOTE: If you would like to receive a link to my new column every week, you can sign up for that here or you can sign up for my regular email newsletter at www.davidsirota.com in the lefthand corner.

The DMV in Northern VA is rendered USELESS from what I've heard and witnessed. It's bad enough when there's one accident on the highway to report every day on the traffic radio in Hampton Roads, Richmond, and Shenandoah. But try listening to traffic reports everyday in Northern VA near DC and you'll be lucky to hear as little as 5 accidents a day ! With all the SEVERE traffic mess in that area, it makes me wonder what the hell is the DMV doing over there these days and how more reckless drivers seem to get their passes compared to the rest of the state.
