Not bad for a start, but you really need to rattle the Beltway bandit's cages and the only way to do it is with a barrage of phone calls for a couple of weeks, jam their lines with irate callers. Tie up their staff, etc.
First target Reid and Pelosi then go systematically work on the BlueDog leader like Tauscher and gorms like Emanual.
If the Democrats were really organized they'd send about 1000 folks to D.C. to shadow the Beltway dems until they relented.
At this point, the petition won't be as effective. The best way, in fact the ONLY way at this point, to KILL the DC Establishment is to vote INDEPENDENT.
Speaking of Beltway "Democrats", today's Washington Post makes fun of the party with a full page glaring PITTING "anti-war liberal" vs "conservative Democrat".
You would never see that kind of a portrayal of division of the GOP on the Post even in their darkest days and if it happened, the GOP would SMASH the Post to DEATH.
Starve the Republi-lites out.
Only contribute directly to populist candidates of your choice. Refuse to send anything to the DNC/DLC, the DCCC or the DSCC.
Be sure to vote the primaries, and if a Republi-lite takes the presidential nomination refuse to contribute, write in the candidate of your choice.
Actually the GOP has much better party discipline and leaders than the Democrats do. The GOP tends to elect hardasses to tun the show. The Democrats elect half witted, corrupt, geezerly fund raisers to positions of leadership. Hence the disparity.
There's a difference between discipline and the lock-step marching of the brain-washed.
Republicans have fallen for the neo-con position of ME-ism and sociopathic behavior to the point that it has damaged this country.
The Democratic party needs to rid itself of the Republi-lite sell-outs who are nothing but Republicans in disguise and start coming back to it's true base who are the working people.
It needs to be pushed and shoved to shed the Republi-lites in "leadership" positions, but the election of populist Democrats during the 2006 election shows a good start.
I always thought that the GOP had its support from various sources such as the media and brown shirt gangs in addition to their own. As for corrupt, the GOP is no less corrupt than the Democrats but it's interesting that they still keep it all together. On the issue of fundraising, one would almost expect it to be the money that keeps them afloat. It only comes on top of their hyping of their ideology. Telling it to half the Democrats is as easy as trying to change the laws of gravity unfortunately. But as was pointed out earlier on this site, for both sides that are equally corrupt, the ideology each side is supposedly associated with has been voided a long time ago and yet happily mis/ab-used especially by the GOP.
max, here's an addition to what waltc mentioned. As pointed out earlier, it's called "USE IT OR LOSE IT" and it's real simple. The Republicans, no matter how little they have USE IT. The Democrats, no matter how full they are LOSE IT.
What amazes me about Democratic activists, is that they will fly across the country to attend a protest march in D.C. which does no good whatsoever or stand with several thousand folks on a beach to protest the war, but they won't organize folks locally to pressure their congressman via phone calls by thousands of irate Democrats.
Not to mention organizing folks to find a replacement for the sell-outs and crooks in their party.
And then the rank and file Democrats wonder why they have no voice in D.C. well duuuh!!
